Juan Marcelino Pinta

Juan Marcelino Pinta was JB Pinta and Luce Grandmaison's 4th child.  He was born 1 August 1809  and baptized 20 October 1810 at St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Little is known about Juan Marcelino at this point.  The 1820 census for NOLA lists Miss Pinta on St. Anne Street as head of household, showing 3 free colored males under the age of 14.  We can assume it was probably Juan and two siblings, Jean Claude & Joseph.  There has been no further documentation found on his life and the will of Jean Baptiste Pinta does not name JC as one of the children.  Perhaps he had already died by the time JB's will was written in 1820.

Louis Henry Pholoe Pinta

The third known child of Jean Baptiste Pinta and Luce Henriette Grandmaison was Louis Henry Pholoe Pinta.  He was born 1 August 1807 in Santiago de Cuba and baptized 20 October 1810 at St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Louis Henry was baptized the same day as two other siblings:  Silvanie Anne and Juan Marcelino.

He went by the name of Henry throughout his life.  Has anyone heard of the name of Pholoe?  One of Henry's younger brothers was also given the same middle name, Jean Claude Pholoe Pinta.  Is this a common name of the time, did the family have a special reason to give two of their children the same middle name, or is it a title of some type?  Families often named their children the same middle name in honor of an ancestor, but at this point we have not found any ancestors named Pholoe. 

Louis Henry married Louise Etienne Jamet (unknown date) and they had one known child, Henry, who was born about 1836.  Records show that Louis Henry owned slaves and in 1847 his widow pleaded for emancipation of her slave Erlne.

Louis Henry died 26 May 1836, at the age of 30, and is buried in St. Louis Cathedral Cemetery #2 in New Orleans, Louisiana. 

Silvanie Anne Pinta

Silvanie Anne is the 2nd of the known children of Jean Baptiste Pinta and Luce Henriette Grandmaison.  Silvanie was born about 1806 and died in Mobile, AL on 17 May 1847 at the age of 41.  Information about her life has been difficult to locate and a fellow researcher has done a great deal of searching for the mysterious Silvanie.  She had children with a man whose last name was Prados but we are not certain of his first name.  It also appears that Silvanie was never married.  Documentation indicates that Silvanie used her sister's name, Marie Josephine Pinta, on several occasions and perhaps took her identity for several years after Marie passed away at the age of 5 in 1815.  Supposition is that Silvanie did this because Marie Josphine's birth certificate states she is white.  Silvanie, in the process of "passing", seized an opportunity to help her accomplish her goal.  We will continue to look for Silvanie and hopefully answer some of the questions we have about her life.

Charles Beauvilaires Pinta

Charles Beauvilaires Pinta was probably the first born child of  Jean Baptiste Pinta and Luce Henriette Grandmaison.  Born about 1803, in Cuba.  On 19 February 1829, at the age of about 26 in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, he married Eulalie Allain, daughter of Valerien Allain and Dorothee Lassise.  Eulalie was the widow of Pierre Derestan Dalcour.  Charles Beauvilaires and Eulalie had five known children between 1831 and 1838.

According to a fellow Pinta researcher, CB was a sponsor at the baptism for one of Casimir Pinta's children in April 1827.

In the early to mid 1830's CB's occupation was listed as dry goods/grocery.  He bought & sold slaves, and was trying to find his direction in life to best support his family.  Beginning in 1838 records indicate he was a jeweler and continued in that occupation through 1855.  Previously, in 1822,  his mother Luce was a jeweler, continuing her late husband's business.  It would appear that CB worked with his father, learned the trade and perhaps helped his mother after JB died in 1820.

CB opened an account at Freedman's Bank on 4 February 1873.  He was listed as white and living at Gasquet #165.  He outlived his wife and children and died at the age of 70 on 17 March 1873 in Orleans Parish, Louisiana.

According to transcriptions of the Archdiocese of New Orleans baptismal records:

20 Aug 1810, Juan Marcelino Pinta, paternal grandparents were:  Luis PINTA and Maria Juana FERTE

30 Sep 1816, Joseph Pinta, paternal grandparents were:   Luis PINTA and Maria Durna FERTE

The original French record for Joseph can be seen on the 13 December 2010 posting, but is very difficult to read.  

These are the only two pieces of information I have in my possession, which indicate the parents of Jean Baptiste.  Does anyone else have any other documentation to support this?

The following site also states that Luis/Louis Pinta and Maria Jeanne Ferte were the parents of Jean Baptiste Pinta, however, no documentation is listed on the website as proof:

Mystery Monday-birth and death date for JB

To start the New Year let's talk about Jean Baptiste Pinta.
1)  What is his birth year/date?
2)  What is his death date?

Born 1767 or 1768:  If I am reading the document correctly, JB was 35 when he was a witness at the baptism of Anne Joseph Brunet on 9 September 1803 (see image on 13 Dec 2010 post).

Born 1775-1794:  1820 Census for New Orleans, LA does not list the names of each person in the household, however, head of household is Miss Grandmaison.  All members of the household are listed as free colored persons except for one, who is listed as a white male between age 26-45.  If this entry was referring to JB, he would have been born 1775-1794.  The rest of the Pinta family members fit into each age category, living at Rue Ste Anne which is where JB was living when he made out his will in April of that year.  Considering the census began in 7 August 1820 and JB died in May, perhaps the census taker included all who had lived in the household in 1820.  This would explain why Miss Grandmaison (Luce) is listed as head of household. 

Born 1772-1773:  Death Record for JB states he died 3 May 1820 at the age of 47, if I understand it correctly.  This death record was recorded on 22 July 1820, several months after his death.

Born 1767 or 1768:  If correctly translated by a friend, JB's will was written on 29 April 1820, which states he was about 52 at the time (see post of 5 November 2010 for image). 

Born 1768 or 1769:  The Sacramental Records of the Roman Catholic Church of the Archdiocese of New Orleans states he was buried on 14 May 1820, his death date was omitted, and he was age 51 when he died.

JB's death record, above, states he died 3 May 1820 and the Archdiocese record mentioned above, states he was buried 14 May 1820.  Something is incorrect.  He would not have been buried 11 days after his death, unless maybe there is an interesting story about it, which we will probably never learn.  But I doubt it!  I think one of the dates is wrong.

If I were to settle on a date I would probably choose 1768 for JB's birth and 13 May 1820 as the day he died.  Let me know what you think. Anyone have any additional documentation showing birth or death dates for JB?  Any ideas?
